Use Your Voice: 2nd Public Consultation Opens for International Generic Indicators

On 24 January 2014, FSC International opened the second public consultation for the draft International Generic Indicators (IGIs). The public consultation will remain open until 31 March 2014.

The IGIs will be used as the starting point for FSC National Standards around the world. The Indicators are designed to evaluate compliance with FSC’s Principles and Criteria.

The second consultation aims at achieving representative participation by FSC stakeholders. To support stakeholder engagement in the process, a group of IGI Ambassadors volunteered to answer questions and offer other guidance.

In the first public consultation, stakeholders clearly communicated the following: 1) Simplify the IGIs; 2) Eliminate redundancy; 3) Focus on performance; and 4) Address Scale, Intensity and Risk. The IGI Group worked very hard to incorporate this feedback into the second draft.

At the IGI website, stakeholders can find the following information:

  • Consultation Methodology – Information about the structure of the second draft of the IGIs and how to provide feedback.
  • Guide to the IGIs – An introduction to the second draft of the IGIs and to the whole IGI process.
  • Navigating the IGI Standard – A tool with links to parts of the standard depending on specific interests.
  • First Consultation comments analysis & Draft 1 vs. Draft 2 – Explains how the comments received during the first consultation were considered and highlights the main changes between the draft versions of the IGIs.
  • A list of IGI Ambassadors – A downloadable document with names and contact information.

The final IGIs will shape FSC forest management around the world. FSC encourages you to get involved and use your voice.
